Flight attendants are usually hired after they have completed and passed the aircrew-training program that most airlines conduct. Qualifications for potential applicants are typically minimal. However, not all hopefuls can get to the training immediately. Here’s what it takes to get into flight attendant school.

Being a flight attendant means interacting with different people of unique cultures and personalities. This is why international airlines usually require their flight attendants to speak at least two major languages fluently. You will likely be taught a second or third language when you enter flight attendant school.

Looks also count, and count a lot. Airlines prefer applicants whose weights are proportionate to their heights. Airlines used to prefer taller applicants, but height has become less significant these days. Most airlines still prefer attendants with clear skin and good teeth.

Only individuals with at least a high school diploma are considered for training. If you have a college diploma or have attended some college, you have an edge over the others.

After passing the preliminaries, you will be subject to formal on-the-job training. The duration of the training will depend on the airline, but as a rule, it usually runs for about three to eight weeks.

Most major airlines conduct their own training for qualified applicants. The main objective of flight attendant schools is to provide useful background information on the job. You will lean basic aviation, parts of aircraft, how to respond to emergency situations, etc. The courses are also integrated with people-oriented disciplines such as education and psychology.
